Before proceeding with the insertion of my port-a-catheter, I needed to undergo a series of diagnostic tests to ensure the safety and efficacy of the procedure. Among these tests was an EKG (electrocardiogram) and an echocardiogram, which provided invaluable insights into the rhythm and function of my heart.
For the EKG, I was asked to lie down while electrodes were placed on various points of my chest to measure the electrical activity of my heart. This painless procedure provided crucial information about the rhythm of my heartbeat, ensuring that I was in sinus rhythm and free from any underlying cardiac issues.
The echocardiogram, on the other hand, offered a more comprehensive assessment of my heart’s structure and function. From the “comfort” of the examination table, I underwent a thorough examination, with a probe capturing detailed images of my heart from different angles. This top-down view provided a holistic picture of my heart’s health, allowing the medical team to assess factors such as ejection fraction, which is a key measure of heart health. It indicates the percentage of blood pumped out of the heart’s chambers with each contraction. A normal ejection fraction typically falls between 50% and 70%, serving as an important indicator of cardiac function. My ejection fraction was 65%.
After approximately 45 minutes of testing, I emerged with a clearer understanding of my heart’s status, reassured by the absence of any concerning findings. The next day, I will return to the facility to meet with my oncologist and undergo surgery to have my port-a-catheter inserted.
With these essential tasks completed, my focus shifted to taking care of me. In this whirlwind of medical appointments and procedures, I recognized the importance of taking time for myself. With the weight of recent events bearing down on me, I decided to indulge in a 90-minute massage—a rare moment of tranquility surrounded by chaos. As someone who frequents spas for scheduled self-care days, I understood the value of relaxation and the profound sense of normalcy it could bring. In the soothing embrace of the massage therapist’s hands, I allowed myself to let go of the worries and uncertainties that plagued my mind. For 90 minutes, I felt like me and it felt nice, even though it was only for a fleeting moment. In that moment, I knew that this was not only necessary but vital for maintaining a sense of balance and well-being.
